Hello hello hello~! Welcome back to Adele Is Reading! Today I’m posting my 49th Library Reads post.

Here are the books I’ve borrowed from the library recently!! I’m so excited to share these with you, you have no idea. Honestly I love libraries because it’s like shopping for books without any of the cost (minus your late fees, or any other fees)!

Library Reads: I’m a huge fan of libraries. I tend to visit the library quite often, and I even come across great finds. These Library Reads posts are where I write a tad about the books I’ve borrowed.

In this post I’ll write about what books I borrowed, and what I think of the books before I actually start reading them. Whether what I say is a sentence or a few sentences long, here I catalogue the books I’ve borrowed. — From doing these posts I hope to spread a little love for libraries and the stories they can give us.

Without a further ado, here are the books I’ve around the dates of July 2021.

The Beholder by Anna Bright

I know absolutely nothing about The Beholder aside from: its the first in it’s series (whether that be duology, trilogy, or more), and I was on a OMG-I-Can-Get-As-Many-Books-As-I-Want high, and why not check out The Beholder? I saw (or I believe. I cannot recall what I read on the book) that The Beholder is a fantasy novel, and I’m obsessed with almost anything Fantasy. So of course I had to borrow The Beholder! AND! The copy that the library has (or at least the version I borrowed) is paperback, so I can appreciate the paperback-floppy-ness goodness.

No spoilers, please! I want to go into reading The Beholder completely blind.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi (Legacy of Orïsha, #2)

Now, I haven’t read the first book in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy. BUT! I do own a copy of Children of Blood and Bone myself, so, hopefully by borrowing Children of Virtue and Vengeance, I finally get around to reading these first two books. I’m excited about Children of Blood and Bone–though the size of the book its absolutely intimidating. From what everyone is saying though, I do believe that COBAB will be one hell of a read.

Count All Her Bones by April Henry (Girl, Stolen, #2)

From what I remember, my local library system (because the library covers quite a few towns/cities —or as americans would call them, counties) didn’t really have that very many April Henry books. I remember suggesting most; if not all, of the books that the library didn’t have as purchases. I’m quite delighted that the library has quite a few more of Henry’s books! You’ll be able to see what ones I’ve borrowed by reading on in this post.

Now, I love YA Mystery, and April Henry is one of my favourite YA Mystery authors out there. I’ve got to be honest with you. When I saw her books sitting there on the shelf, I took all of them with me. I typically don’t like reading physical books synopsis’ (especially YA mystery) because I find that I’m able to correctly predict what will happen in the story. So instead of reading the synopsis’ I just dive in. Which means I haven’t read the synopsis for Count All Her Bones! Please don’t spoil the book for me, haha.

……I just discovered that Count All Her Bones is the second book, following Girl, Stolen, the first book. I’m absolutely recommending Girl, Stolen as a purchase. Yoikes 😬

Crier’s War by Nina Varela (Crier’s War, #1)

Crier’s War has been on my TBR for quite a while now. I can’t (but totally can) believe that it’s been almost been 2 years already! I know that Crier’s War is a YA LGBT Fantasy, and fam, sign me tf up!!! One of my goals this year is to read more LGBTQIA+ novels, so hell yeah!

Aside from that, I don’t know what to exactly expect. So I know I’m looking forward to the adventure.

Endless Water, Starless Sky by Rosamund Hodge (Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, #2)

Endless Water, Starless Sky, if you didn’t know, is the second book to Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, which is a story-retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Though what I remember of this duology, the story was more told in Juilet’s POV. Which I’m quite okay with. Though if I’m remembering correctly, this second book, Endless Water, Starless Sky, is supposed to be told more in Romeo’s POV.

Either way, I’m looking forward to finishing this duology.

Gideon the Ninth by Tasmyn Muir (The Locked Tomb, #1)

I’ve been wanting to read Gideon the Ninth for a long time now. Pretty much ever since I first heard about it, which could have been back in 2018. There’s always the possibility that certain books could be more popular than others, and that is especially so if you’re borrowing books from the library. And since I am perpetually broke, I don’t like giving my money to books wherein there’s a high chance that I won’t end up loving and/or become obsessed with the story.

So I waited. And waited. And waited some more. Then came the influx of reviews saying that Gideon the Ninth is a highly problematic book. Therein I thought that it was great that I didn’t purchase the book, because I didn’t really want any connections to the book if it was truly that problematic.

However, I remember reading a tweet that said something like, “no matter what someone is going to say about a book, there are still going to be people who’re going to read those books and form their own opinions.” And I thought that is so freaking true, because what can be problematic to someone, could not be problematic to other people, you know?

Though I am OFFICIALLY saying that I do NOT know the triggers of Gideon the Ninth, nor do I know how the book is deemed problematic. I’ve NOT read GTN, so I CANNOT have formed my own opinion. I am simply saying that I’m going to read Gideon the Ninth anyway.

The Girl I Used to Be by April Henry

Another April Henry book that I don’t believe was in the library 10+ months ago when I last checked. The Girl I Used to Be seems like a YA Mystery wherein the main character has some pretty traumatic events happen to her. And afterwards she’s a completely different person (which can happen when someone experiences a trauma).

I have absolutely no idea what happens in The Girl I Used to Be, and I don’t want to find out until I read this book. However, I’m getting a little giddy-excited at the thought because it’s been so long since I last read a April Henry novel.

Haha, have I mentioned that April Henry is one of my favourite YA Mystery authors? Because I truly did take a handful of April Henry’s books right off the shelf when I saw them in the library. The Girl WHo Was Supposed to Die being one of them, is very intriguing. As I was writing this out, I had the thought of ‘what if the title The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die, is the last sentence of the book? Like what if the ending sentence was like “they didn’t count on me surviving. I was the girl who was supposed to die.” or something?!’ and yeah, that’s how/where my brain went, lol (lol emoji)!

Heart of Flames by Nicki Pau Preto (Crown of Feathers, #2)

I’ve been genuinely anticipating the moment I could get a hold of a copy of Heart of Flames. Heart of Flames is the second book to Crown of Feathers, in the Crown of Feathers series. I initially read Crown of Feathers back in February ’19! I was lucky enough to read Crown of Feathers via Netgalley, and I don’t think I will ever forget Veronyka’s story! I’m excited about diving back into the Crown of Feathers world—like, being able to rid a phoenix is freaking amazing, and I quite enjoyed the time I had with Veronyka in the first book.

I have no idea what Veronyka will encounter in this second novel but boiiiii I am so freaking excited!

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver (I Wish You All the Best, #1)

I’m not lying when I say this, but, I Wish You All the Best has been on the edge of my mind ever since I first heard about it years ago. Back then I believe I’d been following the authors tumblr, and then other unfortunate events happened. And then seemingly out of nowhere, Mason was publishing a book! I remember the bookish community being so happy for Mason. I Wish You All the Best, has been–for all intents and purposes–been on my mind for YEARS. Now that I’ve finally come across Mason’s book at the library, you bet I took I Wish You All the Best home with me!

The Night She Disappeared by April Henry

Ahh, yes, another one of April Henry’s books has blessed my day. The Night She Disappeared sounds so freaking interesting–not to forget that it sounds intriguing as well! I mean, that title. There are so many ways a story can go with that title alone. And the few sentences of the premise that I read, well, plainly put I want to get to reading The Night She Disappeared ASAP!

The Queen’s Assassin by Melissa De la Cruz

The Queen’s Assassin, is, admittedly, a book that I’ve been borrowing-just-to-return-just-to-borrow-it-again just to repeat that process all over again. I still haven’t read The Queen’s Assassin if you can believe that LOLemoji. Hopefully this nth try will be the one that sticks.

The Queen’s Assassin will be the first book that I’ve read in which Melissa De la Cruz is the sole author. I’ve read a book by her and another author a while ago. So…I don’t really know what to expect, but I know I’m going to be keeping my hopes and expectations very low. I’d rather not have high hopes and expectations only to be let down. Wherein the result of that will be me steering clear / very less likely to read any of her other works.

Rule, and Rise by Ellen Goodlett

Let me be completely honest with ya, it’s been so long I cannot remember what Rule is about. That or I never read the synopsis before and just heard things about Rule that had me intrigued enough to borrow both books. I’ll be going into these two books blind, and honestly, I can’t help but having high hopes with them.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

The Starless Sea has been in my peripherals ever since there’ve been whispers of Erin Morgenstern possibly releasing a new book. After reading The Night Circus (Erin’s first published novel) how could I not want to get my hands on a copy of her new book? I have to remind myself when I start reading The Starless Sea, that it’s not The Night Circus. It’s a different story entirely. I’m desperately trying to lower my expectations in hopes of actually enjoying The Starless Sea. …..btw, is anyone else been typing “The Startless Sea?” No? Just me..???

Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco

Rin Chupeco is one of my all-time favourite authors. Seriously. I first read The Girl From the Well by her, and WOW, I love love love that book! There are parts in TGFTW where some characters… get *cough* murdered…. but it is absolutely deserving, and I relish in the fact that they were terrified before they died! Then I got into reading The Bone Witch (a series that I have not completed, thank u), read, and LOVED Tea. So now I’m trying to catch up with Chupeco’s other works. ….slowly, but surely I’ll get there.

The Undead Pool by Kim Harrison (The Hollows, #12)

It’s been so long since I last read a Hollow novel that I cant really remember how the last book ended, so I’m excited to dive back into the series!!!

The Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison (The Hollows, #13)

I’m truly looking forward to “finishing” The Hollows series. I admit that the first book Dead Witch Walking had me going.. “meh, this book was alright, not really for me or my style…” BUT! I was convinced to read more of the series and I’m actually really glad that I did. The series may not be one of my favourites, but it’s up there! I have no doubt that The Hollows series is definitely a comfort read.

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (Otherworld, #1)

Not gonna lie to you, I’ve been interested in Bitten for so long that I cant even remember when I first heard about the book/story/series. And then I heard that it was going to be a TV show? Wow, haha. That just reinforced my wanting to read the series more, back then. Of course now I still want to read it, hence I’ve borrowed Bitten. Though it’s been so long since I read the synopsis that I’m not even going to bother with re-reading it. I’m going into this babeh blind 😎.

Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi

I’m trying to make it a goal of mine to read more LGBTQIA+ / Queer novels, since I myself am a queer person. So I’m very happy that I managed to snag Tell Me How You Really Feel. I know that the book is LGBT+, and that’s all I want to know about it until I myself sit down and read the copy I have.

Vivian Divine Is Dead by Lauren Sable

Ahh, VDID sounds like a YA Mystery, and I’ve been craving some YA Mystery, so, Vivian Divine Is Dead was an obvious choice. From reading the synopsis, it sounds like Vivian is going to have one hell of a time running from whomever is after her. I don’t quite know what to expect from Vivian Divine Is Dead, but I’m thinking that there’s a high chance that I won’t enjoy this one. I won’t know until I read the book though, so here’s to hoping!

The Storyteller by Antonia Michaelis

The Storyteller is a book that I don’t think I’ve read yet. From skimming the synopsis, it sounds like there’s some sort of fairy tale going on within the story? Maybe there’s a character that’s abusing the other character, in such a subtle way that the other character doesn’t know it’s happening? I literally don’t know what to expect from The Storyteller, but I think I should expect a darker-style story.

Spindle by Shonna Slayton

I love a good retelling and Spindle certainly fits the bill! Honestly, I’ve been wanting to read a retelling for the last good while. I don’t think I’ve read a sleeping beauty retelling quite like Spindle, so I’m excited to get into reading it.

Though I don’t think that SWLS is going to be the holiday read that I’m looking for….

Crown of Bones by A.K. Wilder (Amassia, #1)

Crown of Bones is a story that I have wanted to read for such a long time!! I initially found it via NetGalley and applied for it. Alas, I wasn’t given access to COB, but I knew that there’d be a chance that the library would acquire it, if I’d request this title. And I’m so glad that I did request the book because now I have it in my hands and OOOOOOOOH I am excited! Though I am keeping my expectations for Crown of Bones super, super low. I want to like the novel, not get disappointed by it.

The Princess Knight by G. A. Aiken (The Scarred Earth Saga, #2)

I’ve been so freakin’ excited to dive back into The Scarred Earth Saga ever since I first started reading the first book, The Blacksmith Queen. Seriously, The Blacksmith Queen had me on my toes!! So I’m super excited to dive into The Princess Knight. I actually don’t know much about TPK since I haven’t, and refuse to, read the synopsis. I remember what happened in The Blacksmith Queen though (which is shocking because I usually forget what happened in a pervious novel)..

Gravemaidens is a book that I have been waiting to read for about 2 years now. It’s one of those books that immediately caught my attention. Around the publishing date of Gravemaidens I did see quite a few people talk about the story/book. And I’m one to remember spoilers so while I admired the pictures on bookstagram, I avoided reading the accompanied post, hahaha! 😆 Anywho 👀 I’m so excited for Gravemaidens, and WOW that cover….

As one of the last notes for this Library Reads post, I had made up my mind a while ago that I wouldn’t do these super long LR posts anymore. However, I tend to go overboard at the library with what books I want to borrow…so..yay? 🤔 😆 I plan on separating Library Reads posts by their day of visitation. Unless of course I only end up borrowing one book. I wouldn’t want to waste anyone’s time with me just talking about one book. Book reviews aside 😋.

I’ve borrowed a lot more books than I’ve let on… These other books will be mentioned and talked about in my next Library Reads post.
