Hello friends! I’m back with another book review! Today’s book review will be of
Black Magic Sanction, by Kim Harrison.
Black Magic Sanction is the 8th book in The Hollows series.
TW: Kidnapping mention, Attempted Murder, Death scene, Blood, Murder, Death of a parent mention, Death of a parent, sex scene.
Rachel Morgan has fought and hunted vampires, werewolves, banshees, demons, and other supernatural dangers as both witch and bounty hunter—and lived to tell the tale. But she’s never faced off against her own kind . . . until now.
Denounced and shunned for dealing with demons and black magic, her best hope is life imprisonment—at worst, a forced lobotomy and genetic slavery. Only her enemies are strong enough to help her win her freedom, but trust comes hard when it hinges on the unscrupulous tycoon Trent Kalamack, the demon Algaliarept, and an ex-boyfriend turned thief.
It takes a witch to catch a witch, but survival bears a heavy price.
Well, it’s safe to say that Black Magic Sanction pulled at my heart strings. I wanted to laugh, I wanted to cry, and …. there were many feelings I experienced while reading this 8th Hollows installation.
This is very contradictory to what I’m about to say, but, Black Magic Sanction was everything and nothing as to what I expected. Going into BMS I did know what was going to happen because–shocker here–I read the short synopsis in the inside flap of the dust jacket.
I actually liked the way that this story progressed, truth be told. There were many points within Black Magic Sanction where I thought “Oh, that’s not going to happen. Rachel’ll be responsible and hold herself.” And friends, let me tell you how wrong I was. Rachel did many things that she wasn’t supposed to do, but hey, that’s just Rachel’s personality.
I was sad to see some key characters leave the story—on a different note; I just want to say that I absolutely revelled in the fact that Rachel managed to scare Nick a few times in this novel. Yes, he’s back. I’m not happy about that, but hopefully Nick will be dealt with within the next book.
Much like the rest of the series, Black Magic Sanction was a whirlwind of a read when Rachel found herself in trouble, and Rachel shimmied her way back out again. Mostly unscathed. We’ll see the extent of that in the 9th book hopefully!
All in all, Black Magic Sanction was an interestingly enjoyable read. I though that there were some things that would happen based on how the last book ended, but I’m glad that what I thought would happen didn’t actually take place.
I believe that–while there were some pretty intense moments within Black Magic Sanction–the next book is going to be huge plot wise.
So… I ended up giving Black Magic Sanction, 3 stars.
Have you read Black Magic Sanction? What did you think of the progress that this Hollows instalment added to the series?
Thank you for stopping by!
See you soon, and Happy Reading!
