I saw that Lizbie did this tag and thought it was interesting, so I thought I’d do it myself. Don’t forget to check out Lizbie’s answers!
How this tag works is that there is a set of questions and we answer them. We don’t have to make up any questions, yay!
Onto the tag!
1- What is your favourite genre?
My favourite genre is fantasy. I love the worlds that people can create, or even retellings of previous stories. Examples like Beauty and the Beast retellings, or Cinderella retellings. I’ve even read a Nutcracker retelling that was pretty good!
Honestly though, I love that with Fantasy stories, whether they’re High Fantasy, Urban Fantasy or something in-between, the fact that I can escape into the book is what I love and enjoy most about the Fantasy genre.
2- Who is your favourite author from that genre?
I …. legitimately don’t even know. I’ve read quite a bit of fantasy novels over the years. There have been so many great fantasy authors! Hmmm… One author that immediately comes to mind is Claire Farrell, I started re-reading her work a few weeks ago and I’ve got to say that I genuinely enjoy her stories.
3- What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?
What keeps pulling me back to the fantasy genre is that there’s so much that you can do in the fantasy genre. Shape-shifters? Got ’em. Were-animals? Of course. Vampires? Yep, you betcha. Faeries, Fae, Fairy, and Goblins? They’re here in bounds. There are so many factors and themes in Fantasy, I am endlessly looking for more and more Fantasy.
4- What is the book that started your love for that genre?
Honestly? I can’t even remember. Though I do remember reading a kids book of Greek Myths by Heather Amery and being amazed by it all. Or it could have been when I first read The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong, when I was around 13 years old.
5- If you had to recommend at least 1 book from your favourite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading this genre, what book would you choose and why?
I like to recommend books that are stand-alones, just because I have that “what if” factor going in my head all the time– 24/7. So I’d recommend either Uprooted by Naomi Novik, or An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson.
Both books are stand alone’s and ones that I actually genuinely love. Uprooted is a go-to recommendation because of it’s similarities to Beauty and the Beast. I also just love the imagery that I get when I read Uprooted.
An Enchantment of Ravens is also a recommendation that I give out sometimes, when people want a truly atmospheric story with some fantasy. Especially where the main character is grossly underestimated. Ah, I’ve got to re-read this one now.
6- Why do you read?
I read because I love the escape that I get whenever I read books. Plus, if I didn’t have books I’d have no idea what my life would look like now and that scares me. Books have grounded me, and opened my eyes more than anything else in the world. I read because the stories that people create or re-create are my pride and joy.
