Open Road Summer by Emery Lord | Book Review #100

22504679After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. Her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of healing hearts and break-up ballads.

But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking.

Trigger Warning: Abuse.

I had gone into this book expecting the normal contemporary-lovey-dovey book. Instead what I got was an emotional whirl-wind of chracters. Reagan, the main characte, is the most emotional. And frankly, one of the characters (in all time) that I can relate too.
The writing in this book is very good. Everything flows really well, and from the minute I started reading Open Road Summer, I was hooked. I couldn’t stop! Open Road Summer was a one-read book.

Another thing that I like about Open Road Summer is that the author didn’t focus on every single detail. Emery let it be so that when there was something going on, the story slowed down enough to let us read what was happening. And now even more characters have gotten under my skin.

Reagan is a really tough character. She holds a stony exterior in-front of people she doesn’t trust. And she doesn’t let people in easily. Reagan’s had some stuff happen to her, and frankly, thats why she doesn’t let people in, right off the bat. That, and Reagan vows to herself that she’ll be there for her best-friend during her friends tour. Reagan faces many emotional challenges in this book. She’s stopped form almost beating people up (in defence of her best-friend).

Matt, oh my god. What can I say?? He’s funny, and smart, and flirtatious and just overall cute! Matt’s also had stuff happen to him in his life, and thats what I think really draws the two (Reagan and Mat) together.

I love all the characters in this book. They’re all so charming!!! I wish there were a second version to this book that’s been told in Matt’s point of view…

Open Road Summer was a really fun read, and not at all what I was expecting.
